1. Organizational Context
a. Organizational Setting

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Director, Madrid Operations Division.
2. Duties and Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:
a. Lead, plan and control the Service's work, determining priorities and allocating resources for the completion and timely and quality delivery of work products in accordance with results-based management principles as well as key performance indicators.
b. Manage staff in terms of performance, career planning, training, mobility and change; foster a working environment that combines individual responsibility and team work and that promotes the achievement of individual and team objectives.
c. Advise team coordinators on handling complex and contentious issues.
d. Supervise the Operations Teams to ensure all production plans and working standards such as examination manuals are implemented.
e. Supervise the Goods and Services Database Section and ensure its support regarding classification issues to Operations Teams as well as continuous review and improvement of classification policies of the Madrid System.
f. Provide recommendations to the Director on the optimal composition of teams, program activities, improvements of work flow and procedures, enhancement of ICT support, etc.
g. Assist the Director in resources planning, production reporting and human resources management.
h. Represent the Organization and provide substantive expertise and advice at international, regional and national meetings.
i. Perform other related tasks as required.
3. Requirements
Education (Essential)
Advanced university degree in IP law, business administration or related discipline. A first-level university degree plus two years of relevant experience in addition to the experience requested below may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
Experience (Essential)
At least ten years of relevant professional experience in the field of IP, especially in trademarks.
Experience (Desirable)
Experience of working in an Intellectual Property Office or comparable working environment.
Language (Essential)
Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
Language (Desirable)
Knowledge of other UN official languages, particularly French, or of the language of a major user country.
Job Related Competencies (Essential)
Good knowledge of trademark law and registration, especially Nice Classification System.
Solid people and resource management skills, with the ability to effectively manage and direct diverse teams.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze raw data, draw conclusions therefrom and develop actionable recommendations.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Mobility: WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities, office or duty station of the Organization. Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions and/or to another duty station.
Annual salary:
Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment. Please note that this estimate is for information only. The post adjustment multiplier (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change (increase or decrease) without notice. The figures quoted below are based on the June 2022 rate of 71.4%
Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.
